After destroying the toughest women’s MMA fighter in the entire UFC history, it’s not surprising that a lot of people are praising that new bantamweight champion, Holly Holm. One of her biggest supporters is Jon Jones.
Athletes, celebrities, and even fellow fighters celebrated Holm’s achievement where the new champ was seen playing the perfect game. Rousey, now with the record of 12-1, lost her belt and bantamweight title for the very first time since she started her career. Holly Holm, who now has a record of 10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC, ended the epic bout in just two rounds; Holm executed a powerful head kick which knocked Rousey out. A couple of top fighters expressed their pride with Holm’s achievement, but none of them topped how Jones expressed his. Jones is a friend and teammate of Holm at Team Jackson-Winkeljohn in New Mexico.
This epic fight was slotted as the UFC 193’s PPV main card which was held at Etihad Stadium in Australia. Everyone was looking forward to Rousey’s victory, just like what happened with her previous fights. But instead, Rousey met her first ever loss when pro-boxing champ Holly Holm threw powerful hits. Holly’s victory over the former bantamweight champion was deemed the biggest upset in women’s MMA UFC history. A lot of people were surprised with Holly’s skills, but in reality, Holm has already made her mark in MMA and boxing. In fact, Jones said that Holm should be the one lauded as the ‘world’s best female combat athlete’, and not Rousey.
“In my opinion Holly Holm is already the G.O.A.T. of women’s combat sports. She was considered the greatest female boxer to ever compete in the sport and now she has defeated the greatest female mixed martial arts fighter to date. Her accolades are absolutely unheard of, but that’s not what makes me such a fan of Holly. It’s the way she carries herself outside of the bright lights and the arenas,” Jones posted on Facebook.
Jones also revealed that the other reason why Holm has found such success is because of her amazing personality. Her fighting skills are amazing, yes, but her personality outside the octagon definitely made a difference. According to Jones, Holly is very humble and selfless all the time, traits that should be in a true champion.
“I know the MMA community doesn’t really know Holly yet, so let me be the first to tell you: She is the most classy and down to earth athlete I’ve ever had the pleasure to be around. She is the long time pride of Albuquerque, New Mexico not only because the way she competes, but the way she treats each and every individual that has the opportunity of meeting her,” Jones said.
“This actually can be a problem at times, a simple trip for a gallon of milk to the grocery store could take her an easy 45 minutes and she doesn’t even mind haha. If you’re impressed by Holly’s talent, wait until you get an understanding of what type of character she possesses; it is truly world class. She is a role model that you would love to have your daughter’s look up to. I’m so honored to be able to call her a teammate and most importantly a friend,” he added.
